Biography
Laura Bosetti Tonatto is an Italian perfumer born and raised in Turin, where an early gift for scent was recognised in childhood and nurtured within an artistic family. She trained toward perfumery through a grounding in chemistry and time spent in Grasse, the historic French centre of the craft, before establishing herself as one of the few internationally recognised women 'noses'.
Working professionally since 1986, she became a pioneer of custom-made fragrance in Italy, composing scents both for major cosmetic houses and for private clients. Her reputation for bespoke work reached royalty: she was commissioned to create a personalised fragrance for Queen Elizabeth II, and she has been associated with scent projects for other prestigious clients and institutions.
Her brands include Tonatto Profumi and the Essenzialmente Laura boutiques in Rome. Beyond composition, she has devoted much of her career to the history and culture of perfume, reconstructing historical scents from ancient and Renaissance texts and, since 2006, teaching perfume art and production at the University of Ferrara.
Her contributions have been formally honoured in Italy, including her appointment as a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2012.
