Biography
Roja Dove, born Roger Bird in Sussex, England, in 1956, is a British perfumer and one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary luxury fragrance. He traces his fascination with scent to childhood, recalling how his mother's perfume lingered in his room after she kissed him goodnight. Rather than complete a university path in medicine, he redirected his life toward perfumery after an early encounter with the house of Guerlain.
He joined Guerlain in 1981, entering through its training and public relations department, and remained with the house for close to two decades. There he rose to become its Global Ambassador, reportedly the first person outside the Guerlain family to hold the role, and became widely known by the honorific "Professeur de Parfum." His deep immersion in classical French perfumery shaped the rich, structured style he would later become known for.
After leaving Guerlain, Dove established his own ventures, first RDPR and then Roja Parfums. In 2004 he opened the Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie on the sixth floor of Harrods in London, and from around 2005 he developed a line of semi-bespoke and eponymous fragrances. His own brand, built around lavish, densely composed scents, includes widely discussed releases such as Roja Haute Luxe, and he also created the fragrance Diaghilev for a 2010 exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
