Biography
Michael Carby is a British perfumer of Jamaican heritage who works for the fragrance house Givaudan. He studied biology and chemistry and originally planned a path toward medical school, but after entering the fragrance industry in 1993 as an analytical chemist he was drawn to the creative side of perfumery and never left.
Over his career he has composed widely recognized mainstream scents, most notably a string of Bath & Body Works favorites such as Cactus Blossom, Sun Washed Citrus, Eucalyptus Rain and Beach Weather, alongside work for brands including Avon, Clean, Jennifer Lopez and The Merchant of Venice.
Carby is a longstanding collaborator with the musician Drake on Better World Fragrance House, where his compositions include Carby Musk (named in his honor), Summer Mink and the 2026 eau de parfum Cloudar, a woody aromatic built around ginger, jasmine sambac, tonka bean and Haitian vetiver.
