Jean-Christophe Hérault is a French perfumer who grew up between Paris and the Oise, the son of a father who produced fragrance concentrates for the industry. His own fascination with scent came later and personally rather than through the family trade, and he trained first in chemistry before entering the business through quality-control work at Fragrance Resources in Grasse.

His formative apprenticeship came under the celebrated perfumer Pierre Bourdon, who agreed to mentor him only on the condition that he cultivate a broad cultural education alongside his technical study of raw materials — a formation that drew on literature and art history as much as on the perfumer's organ. Fragrance Resources was later absorbed into International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), where Hérault has built his career and risen to a senior perfumer role based in Paris.

Across his catalogue he has composed for a range of designer and luxury houses, including Balenciaga (Florabotanica), Mugler (Alien Man), Davidoff (Cool Water Parfum), Gucci (The Alchemist's Garden), Christian Louboutin, Dolce & Gabbana, and Kenzo. His palette leans on materials such as patchouli, iris, labdanum, incense, vanilla and pink pepper, and he describes an emotive, memory-driven approach — favoring smoky, leathery accords and a deliberate sense of wonderment over pure technical display.
