Frank Voelkl is a German-born perfumer whose olfactory sensibility was shaped by a childhood spread across Germany, France and the Netherlands. After studying chemistry he trained at ISIPCA, the French perfumery school, and credits an early mentorship with Maurice Roucel for steering him toward the streamlined, assertive style that would define his work. His first composition, built around tiare flower as an homage to his Tahitian wife, helped launch his career.

He began working in Germany before relocating to the United States, where he has now been based for roughly three decades, and joined Firmenich (today dsm-firmenich) in 2005. His long collaboration with the 'slow perfumery' house Le Labo has produced close to twenty widely recognized fragrances, most famously Santal 33 (2011) — a warm, dry sandalwood-and-leather accord that grew into a cult signature through word of mouth rather than advertising. Other Le Labo creations attributed to him include Ylang 49, Musc 25 and Benjoin 19.

Beyond the niche world, Voelkl has composed for major designer and celebrity lines, with credits including Gucci Bamboo and Tom Ford Tuscan Leather Intense, alongside scents tied to high-profile names. Industry writers note that Firmenich's own analytical software can reportedly identify a Voelkl composition with high accuracy, which he attributes simply to his sense of proportion.

In July 2026, dsm-firmenich named Voelkl a Master Perfumer — among the company's first Fine Fragrance appointments to that rank since 2016 — recognizing a body of work that spans cult niche releases and global commercial successes.
