Daphné Bugey is a French perfumer, born in Grenoble, who traces her calling to a childhood family trip to Grasse, the historic center of the French fragrance industry. That early encounter with the region's perfume houses set her on a single-minded path: she went on to train at ISIPCA, the Versailles-based perfumery school, before joining the fragrance house Firmenich in 1997, where she has remained ever since, now working under the merged company dsm-firmenich as a Principal Perfumer.
Over nearly three decades at the house, Bugey has built a wide-ranging portfolio spanning mainstream designer fragrances and niche, artisanal releases. Her commercial work includes Kenzo Amour, Thierry Mugler's Aura, Jean Paul Gaultier's Scandal and Scandal By Night, K by Dolce & Gabbana, and fragrances for Hugo Boss and DSquared2, while on the niche side she has composed for Le Labo (including several of its city-inspired classics), L'Artisan Parfumeur, Penhaligon's, Byredo, and Neela Vermeire Créations. This split between mass-market glamour and small-batch experimentation is a defining feature of her career.
Bugey describes her creative approach as favoring contrast and controlled excess — pairing unexpected materials, such as honeyed sweetness against bitter patchouli, or rhubarb against orange blossom, to give her compositions tension and movement. She works frequently with musk, jasmine, vanilla, sandalwood, and rose centifolia, and has described drawing inspiration from travel, literature, and a personal life built around movement, including paragliding and kitesurfing.
Her 2023 composition Abyssae, part of L'Artisan Parfumeur's La Botanique collection, was singled out by the Fragrance Foundation France as one of the year's best niche releases, one of the few individually credited recognitions tied to her name in industry press.
