Chris Maurice is the professional pseudonym of Christian Carbonnel, a Spanish perfumer who represents the third generation of the Carbonnel perfumery dynasty in Barcelona. The family firm was founded by his grandfather, Maurice Carbonnel, who set up production of high-quality essential oils in Alicante in 1921 before the business relocated to Barcelona in 1925 — the pseudonym itself echoes his grandfather's name. Raised, in his own account, surrounded by bottles and essences and mentored by his father Francisco Carbonnel alongside the house's team of perfumers, he developed his craft inside the family laboratory rather than through a conventional outside apprenticeship.

Under his direction, Carbonnel modernized its operations while positioning itself as a creative supplier to the niche and luxury sector. He deliberately limits his personal output to roughly 20 to 30 compositions a year to avoid formulaic work, and he is known for sourcing rare and precious raw materials, with a particular affinity for rich oriental structures, oud, resins, and dramatic amber-woody materials such as ambrocenide.

Working as Chris Maurice, he has composed for a long list of respected European and Middle Eastern houses, including Xerjoff and its sister lines Sospiro and Casamorati, as well as Nishane, Fragrance Du Bois, Masque Milano, Kajal Parfums Paris, and Zoologist. His best-known creations include Xerjoff's Alexandria II, More Than Words, and Lira, and the animalic Camel for Zoologist. His work has drawn recognition at the Art and Olfaction Awards, and he has more recently pursued independent projects under his own niche venture.
